Onion juice for hair growth: how to make it, apply it and what to expect

Onion juice for hair growth is one of the most searched home remedies in India, and for good reason: it's cheap, easy and has a little research behind it. Here's how to extract and apply it properly, how to manage the smell, and realistic expectations for thinning hair.

Does onion juice for hair growth work? The traditional and modern view

Onions are rich in sulphur compounds, and sulphur is part of keratin, the protein hair is made of. A small study in people with patchy hair loss (alopecia areata) found more regrowth with onion juice than with tap water, and many people report thicker-feeling hair with regular use. Large, high-quality trials are still lacking, so think of it as a supportive scalp treatment, not a cure for baldness.

In Ayurveda, onion (palandu) is considered heating and stimulating. Applied externally, that warming quality is believed to increase circulation to the scalp — which is also why it can irritate sensitive skin.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium red or white onion
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil or aloe vera gel (optional, to soften it)
  • Cotton pads or a dropper bottle

How to prepare

  1. Peel and chop the onion, grind it and squeeze the pulp through a clean muslin cloth or fine sieve.
  2. Mix in coconut oil or aloe if your scalp is sensitive. Use fresh — don't store for more than a day in the fridge.

How to use

  • Dab the juice onto the scalp, focusing on thinning areas, and massage gently for 5 minutes.
  • Leave for 20–30 minutes, then wash with a mild shampoo.
  • Use two or three times a week for at least 8–12 weeks before judging results.

Helpful habits

  • Rinse with diluted apple cider vinegar or a few drops of lemon in a mug of water, or add a drop of rosemary oil, to cut the smell.
  • Combine with a protein-rich diet and adequate iron — topical remedies can't make up for deficiencies.

Precautions

  • Patch test behind the ear first. Stop if you feel strong burning, redness or itching.
  • Keep it away from the eyes and don't apply on broken or inflamed skin.
  • Sudden, patchy or rapid hair loss needs a dermatologist's assessment; onion juice is not a substitute for treatment. Pregnant women and children should use it only after a patch test and with extra caution.

Frequently asked questions

How long does onion juice take to grow hair?

If it helps, most people notice changes after two to three months of regular use. It works best for mild thinning or shedding, not long-standing baldness.

Can I leave onion juice in my hair overnight?

It isn't recommended. Twenty to thirty minutes is enough; longer contact increases the risk of irritation and a lingering smell.

Is red or white onion better for hair?

Both work similarly. Red onions have slightly more antioxidants, but freshness and regular use matter more than colour.
